Ubiquiti introduces new compact UPS Tower, with UniFi integration

Ubiquiti launches new compact UPS with direct UniFi support

UniFi UPS Tower

Ubiquiti has today launched two new UPS products, with more as we are told - coming soon. The first of these is the entry level model, called the UPS Tower and it features ten outlets on the back, five of which are for battery backup and the other five are for surge protection.

The UPS Tower is a very familiar form factor, at 280.5mm tall, 99mm wide and 288mm long and weighing at just over 8kg. This is perfect for under desk use cases and it won't take up too much space.

When Ubiquiti has made power related products in the past, such as the USP-PDU-Pro and the USP-PDU-HD, these have only been available in North America, due to the outlet ports being a standard AC socket. However, it seems that Ubiquiti has designed another worldwide version of the UPS-Tower, with US outlets on the version for the US and a standee IEC (IEC-13) connector for the rest of the world.

The US model also has a fixed power cable, whereas the worldwide version has an IEC (IEC-14) connector for input.

This is good to see, as this opens up the support for these devices to customers outside of the US.

In terms of battery specs, this is only designed to withstand power surges, so don't expect it to power loads of equipment up for 30 mins or more. The UPS Tower has a 9Ah LED acid battery, with a max load of 600W. Ubiquiti says that at a full load it'll last 2 mins and then at half load, it'll run for 7 minutes.

Once adopted to the UniFi Controller, it supports safe shutdown pairing. This will allow the UniFi controller to tell those connected to devices to shutdown safely, before the UPS battery has run out.

The smart shutdown is also compatible with third party devices that use NUT and can provide charge level, voltage and runtime to empty information.

Pricing

The UPS Tower is priced pretty competitively, at $159 in the US or £150 in the UK.

What other models are coming?

In the YouTube video to go along with this announcement, Ubiquiti also hinted that other more premium offerings are coming soon, aimed at the enterprise customers. These devices will have higher capacity, sine-wave filtering and lithium-ion batteries.

HostiFi

HostiFi provides hosting for both Ubiquiti and TP-Link software-defined-networking (SDN) applications, with servers for UniFi, UISP and Omada. We also offer network consulting, with HostiFi Professional Services.
