U7 Pro Max vs U7 Pro XGS

A comparison of the Ubiquiti UniFi U7 Pro Max and the Ubiquiti UniFi U7 Pro XGS access points to work out which one is best for you

UniFi U7 Pro Max vs U7 Pro XG

Ubiquiti has always had the same design language for its indoor wireless access points - typically round and slightly bulbous designs. However, with the new U7 Pro XG and U7 Pro XGS that were announced in March 2025, Ubiquiti deviated to a very slim profile design and with the XGS model specifically, the specs are very closely matched with the Pro Max.

Which one to choose?

The U7 Pro Max and U7 Pro XGS are very similarly priced access points and are very close in terms of specifications too. Both devices can handle 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz, with 8 spatial streams. The supported channel widths, antenna gain and maximum TX power are also either identical, or very closely matched.

Where the two devices differ is down to the Ethernet port speed, which is 10GbE on the U7 Pro XGS and 2.5GbE on the U7 Pro Max. This kind of thing will only really make a difference in dense deployments, but it might have a bearing on which model to choose when looking at future proofing.

Also the power method is different, with the Pro XGS requiring 802.3bt (PoE++) at a minimum, whereas the Pro Max needs 802.3at (PoE+). While this won't be an issue of new installations as these details can be planned ahead, it will affect the decision behind swapping out existing APs for the Pro XGS, as only the high-end UniFi PoE switches support 802.3bt.

Elsewhere, the Pro XGS has Zero-Wait DFS, a dedicated spectral scanning radio and comes in either white or black.

Recommendation

Because both APs are so similar, it only comes down to if you need 10GbE support or not. The Pro XGS offers a good in-between model before jumping up to the E7, which costs $499 and has 10 streams instead of 8. However, if you have older PoE switches that can't handle 802.3bt, then the U7 Pro Max is the one to go for to get a very similar experience.

For even less, at $199 - the U7 Pro XG has the same design as the XGS, also offers 10GbE networking but has 6 streams instead. However, it lacks the dedicated spectral scanning radio from the XGS.
