Ubiquiti has recently launched the new U7 Mesh AP, which is an updated version of the previous U6 Mesh AP, that was released in 2022. The exterior design hasn't changed, but the internal specifications have, although some have actually been downgraded.

What's new with the U7 Mesh?

The quite unique design of the U7 Mesh has stayed the same, with its slender 'soda can' like look and this has been around since the FlexHD was released. This design works well making mounting on poles, walls and other surfaces relatively easy.

While the exterior hasn't changed, Ubiquiti has upgraded the WiFi specifications, jumping from WIFi 6 to WiFi 7, which has increased the maximum supported 5GHz channel widths and maximum throughput for 2.4GHz. One obvious omission is support for 6GHz, which is now seemingly reserved for the U7 Pro Outdoor only (in supported regions).

Even without 6GHz support, other areas have had some important upgrades. For example, the weatherproofing rating has increased from IPX5 to IPX6, which is thanks to an updated mounting system on the new U7 Mesh AP.

Elsewhere, the spatial streams have dropped from 6 to 4, reducing from 4x4 MIMO to 2x2 MIMO on 5GHz. Although despite this, the maximum throughput hasn't reduced that much, thanks to the addition of 240MHz, vs 160MHz on the U6 Mesh.

One major improvement is the new directional 5GHz antenna which works to improve mesh based depolymenrs where the U7 Mesh is connecting to other outdoor access points. Ubiquiti has also said that this new anetnna also improves client performace too.

Lastly, the Ethernet port speed has been upgraded from 1GbE to 2.5GbE to bring it inline with the other U7 access points.

The new U7 Mesh AP is now available in the US for $199 and in the UK, it is marked as 'coming soon' with prices listed at £159. It is also available in Europe too, priced at €216,59.
