At the end of 2025, Ubiquiti introduced its new UniFi Travel Router (UTR), which debuted for $79. It quickly sold out and was subsequently out of stock, on and off for many months afterwards. Although not a perfect travel router by any means, it offers an extremely simple way to take your own home or business network with you wherever you go. Pretty early on, there were some teething issues related to software and updating the firmware but in the months since, the updates have come thick and fast and it is a very compelling device.

Ubiquiti's own Teleport VPN manages to work through many layers of NAT without issue and the UTR can be used with a wide variety of WAN connections, from USB smartphone tethering, Ethernet and WiFi.

However, based on feedback, apparently - Ubiquiti has launched a new follow up model with a much more powerful antenna, borrowing some of the learning from its AirWire WiFi client that was launched a few months ago. The antenna can now flip up and be angled towards whichever direction is required to pick up a better WiFi connection.

While the antenna gain specifications have not been published for either the standard UTR or the new LR model, the antenna TX power has been increased quite significantly, jumping up from 13dBm to 20dBm on 2.4GHz and from 15dBm to 23dBm on 5GHz. Without knowing the exact dBi gain figures, it is hard to know the extent of the difference it would make, but it should be useful in larger hotel rooms for both in room coverage and picking up a signal from the hallway.

Apart from the new larger antenna, nothing else has changed on the UTR-LR. It has practically the same footprint, has two USB-C ports, two RJ45 sockets and has 802.11ac WiFi support.

Going forward, it would be good if Ubiquiti could launch a UTR-Pro with a built in battery and potentially it's own eSIM or SIM card for integrated 4G/5G, but that remains to be seen.
