Ubiquiti launches new UniFi Travel Router

New UniFi Travel Router allows simple access back to your home network

UniFi Travel Router

Ubiquiti has this week launched a new affordable travel router, with a lot of features for the price. The new UTR costs $79 in the US and is quite a small form factor. The device is about the same size as a deck of cards, and is pretty slim too. In fact, it is so slim that the Ethernet ports are behind a door, just like how some netbooks used to be.

The main selling point of the UniFi Travel Router is its ability to one click connect via VPN back to your home or business network. It does this by pairing with an existing UniFi Cloud Gateway or UXG. While setting up the UTR, you can choose which WiFi networks to replicate. The idea being that you can bring your home network with you to a hotel or Airbnb and all of your devices connect.

The UniFi Travel Router can connect to the internet in a few ways. Either via Ethernet, with an additional LAN port for wired devices. It can also connect to an existing WiFi network or via USB-C to a phone to share its mobile data connection.

Connecting to a captive portal WiFi network makes the most sense as some captive portal networks restrict the amount of devices that can be connected at one time. It'll then use your phone to authenticate on the network.

In terms of specs, Ubiquiti has restricted it to WiFi 5 (802.11ac), so this means both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

The new UniFi Travel Router will be available from the official Ubiquiti store from 29th December for $79 in the US or £78 in the UK.
