The U6 Pro launched back in 2021 and was Ubiquiti's professional grade access point offering for the mid-range and it offered a significant update in specs over the original UAP-AC-PRO, that was introduced to the lineup back in 2015. When the U7 Pro launched in January 2024, again it offered an updated design - but in a very similar form factor.

Which one to choose?

Looking at the specifications, the U6 Pro and U7 Pro are actually very similarly specced when you look at the WiFi capabilities. Both have the same number of streams (6), both can handle 300+ clients and both support 2.4GHz and 5GHz. That said, 2.4GHz got a boost from 4x4 to 4.8Gbps to 6x6 to 11.5Gbps on the U7 Pro.

The U7 Pro does bring WiFi 7 (802.11be) improvements such as Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which allows a single client to aggregate both 2.4GHz and 5GHz at the same time. However, many client devices don't yet support this feature yet. The U7 Pro also brings 6GHz support which if you're buying now, is probably the most significant reason to upgrade.

The main difference is the inclusion of 6GHz WiFi 7 on the U7 Pro, whereas the U6 Pro is limited to 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The 6GHz band is less congested and can provide much faster speeds to compatible clients. Over time, more and more client devices will support 6GHz and so this would be the main reason to upgrade.

Pricing wise, the U6 Pro is no longer officially sold by Ubiquiti and so some vendors will have some remaining stock. It was typically priced at around $179, vs $219 for the U7 Pro.

Recommendation

Since the U6 Pro is no longer available from Ubiquiti directly, the U7 Pro is the natural successor. The U7 Pro brings 6GHz, WiFi 7 and a faster Ethernet uplink port.
