No - despite the confusing name that Ubiquiti has chosen, the UniFi OS Server isn't a new hardware device that the company is selling. Instead, it is a new licence-free software package that is available to download for Windows, macOS and Linux.
UniFi OS is the underlying operating system that lives on the UniFi Cloud Gateways and allows them to manage the various applications that the company offers. This includes Network, Protect, Talk, Access and Connect. UniFi OS also offers advanced user management and tight integration with the UniFi Site Manager.
Ubiquiti offering UniFi OS to be installed on pretty much any hardware and not exclusively on UniFi Cloud Gateways marks a huge shift for the company. Previously features that were only available on those devices will now be available when self-hosting, such as InnerSpace, SiteMagic, UniFi Identity and Teleport VPN.
Because Ubiquiti offers other applications, like Protect and the others mentioned above - there is the potential to offer other applications to be used with UniFi OS Server. Ubiquiti has also mentioned in its own blog post that it is a "software package that delivers UniFi Network, and soon additional applications in the UniFi ecosystem." This all but confirms that other UniFi applications will be able to run on UniFi OS.
HostiFi provides hosting for both Ubiquiti and TP-Link software-defined-networking (SDN) applications, with servers for UniFi, UISP and Omada. We also offer network consulting, with HostiFi Professional Services.
